Lamu county has approved a Sh20billion wind power project at Baharini area in Mpeketoni. The project will be undertaken by a Belgian company Electrawinds in partnership with International Finance Corporation (World Bank) and Kenwind company of Kenya.
The project to generate over 90MW once completed. The county assembly said the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, NEMA, the relevant committees and the Baharini community had all approved the project.
The investors are now expected to undertake massive Corporate Social Responsibility programmes for locals including financing a new settlement scheme of up to 1,000 plots to be administered by the Lamu county authorities before the project takes off.
